Internet Safety Tips:

1) Don’t ever wire money to someone unless you speak with them directly. An email may look like it is legitimately from your friend or family member, but you can never be certain, so verify the situation by phone to make sure that you’re dealing with who you think you’re dealing with.

2) If you are receiving money from someone you don’t know via check, make sure they check has actually cleared before delivering or shipping what they purchased from you. Despite the fact that your bank balance is generally updated right after dropping off a check at your bank, it will take 2 to 3 days at minimum to fully process a check. If there’s any question about whether a check has completely cleared, call your bank to make sure.

3) Always use different passwords for every site that you register an account on. This way, if that site is hacked and your password is stolen (which does happen), the hacker will only have access to your account on that one site, instead of being able to use that same password to access every site you have an account on. Since it is very difficult to keep track of so many passwords without mixing them up or forgetting them, use a service like LastPass (www.lastpass.com) to help you both generate new passwords and to keep track of them for you.
