It's your community... time to vote on a feature.

Posted By: SanctuaryRTBH - July.2.2009 - Comments(1)

Invision 3.0.0 has a number of new features. One of them allow for the users to "vote" up a user based on posts. We can turn it off or leave it on.

Regardless of mine or Atnevon's personal opinion on this feature we want to put it up for a vote. This is YOUR community after all so it's not a choice we want to make for you.

While we both agree that it's a cool new feature, there are some things we would like you to consider before placing your vote. (We're not trying to influence anyone one way or another - it's entirely up to all of you.)

This place has never been about popularity or the like. It's been a place where pretty much all are welcome. (There are some exceptions naturally. ;-) ) It's a place where you are welcome to contribute or not. You can come back years later and we'll still greet you as if you never left. Everyone here. Belongs here. We take all kinds, we don't hold grudges here, and past mistakes are exactly that. Past. Everyone is welcome back whether they are gone a day, a week, a month or years.

We may not like what people post sometimes, we may disagree - but the right is there for them to express themselves. We will always, at the very least, make the effort to leave post intact as they are. (There again will always be the exception as we have the rights of the majority to consider while at the same time the rights of the individual.) It can be a difficult path to keep balanced sometimes but we will always make the effort to do so.

What we truly don't want to see is anyone feeling slighted if they don't get votes, or if someone gets more etc. This forum is not a contest. We're all just people. (Well most of us anyway.) wink.gif The feature bothers us a little from the standpoint of it being turned into a popularity thing.

Again though, our thoughts on it aside, this is your community. This is your decision.

Feel free to discuss this before voting as well. There is no rush on this.

Rumours...

Posted By: SanctuaryRTBH - July.2.2009 - Comments(1)

Okay, so I received an email today containing people(s) speculations about a subject and a crap load of rumour mill material and I found myself wondering if it was true. Even though some of it was ludicist at best. (I think.) So I shared the information with someone(s) who may have been able to say true or false. Afterwards I was thinking. What the hell? Who cares? Why did I care?

I had to stop and question my own reaction to it. Though parts were actually amusing.

What is our fascination with rumours? Why do we feel the need to ask questions about them or repeat them?

Is there ever anything positive that comes from rumours?

AIDS Vaxxine

QUOTE
An HIV/AIDS vaccine developed by University of Western Ontario professor Chil-Yong Kang has reached "an important milestone" as it pushes towards the first phase of human trials.

Sumagen Canada announced this week it has submitted an Investigational New Drug application to the United States Food and Drug Administration to begin Phase 1 human trials for its SAV001 AIDS vaccine.

“The application for the approval of Phase 1 human clinical trials is a very important milestone for our vaccine development,” he says.

I honestly never really thought that we would have a cure to aids within my lifetime, but it's extremely nice to be proven wrong in this case. Scientists may have managed to defeat one of the worst diseases of our time in a much shorter timespan than I think many of us ever imagined.

It really is amazing what we can do together when people pull their resources and their minds together for a good cause.

Invision 3.0.0 Release

Posted By: SanctuaryRTBH - June.26.2009 - Comments(6)

I was very sleepy last night and thought I was posting something here and I wasn't lol. I was posting it elsewhere.

Here's the wayward post:

Darn it darn it darn it!

Invision release 3.0. with this note:

"Remember that any skins, modifications, graphics, etc. on your version 2.x IPB will not work on IP.Board 3.0."

So

crap, crap, crap

Not only will some of the custom backend code need to be redone - but the front too. I mean the backend - no big. But that front end wrap we did on this board was a major PITA. Major.

*sighs*

Here

we

go

again.

nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.

I hate you today invision. Almost as much as as I hate Vista.

THUD

(But it's mostly not going to be my problem muahahahahaha.)

I'm going to be made to regret saying that. I just know it. LOL

In other words:

We are preparing for an upgrade and within the next few weeks we'll implement it, or sooner and things could get a little interesting.

We'll first test it over on one of our mirror and see what happens. Even with the testing - anything could happen. We'll let you know when we do it live. smile.gif

Shrinking down cities

Posted By: Atnevon - June.18.2009 - Comments(4)

[quote]Dozens of US cities may have entire neighbourhoods bulldozed as part of drastic "shrink to survive" proposals being considered by the Obama administration to tackle economic decline.

The government looking at expanding a pioneering scheme in Flint, one of the poorest US cities, which involves razing entire districts and returning the land to nature.

Local politicians believe the city must contract by as much as 40 per cent, concentrating the dwindling population and local services into a more viable area.

To a lot of people this will probably sound pretty drastic, but when the number of vacant homes in an area is as staggering as it is in some areas, I actually think this is a good idea. It gives us a chance to bring back a little bit of the nature that we tore down to build the cities in the first place, instead of just leaving homes to rot and fall apart.

Do you think this is too extreme, or would you support the effort if it came to your city?

New!! - Make Dedications on Requests

Posted By: SanctuaryRTBH - May.16.2009 - Comments(8)

For a long time members either had to email us or get us on our IM's to do a dedication for someone or something. Well, I'm pleased to say, there's been another method added that I think is wonderful.

If you go to the request section of the site, among the lyrics and request buttons, a new button that says dedicate. Here you can write your dedication and submit it as easy as 1. 2. 3.

Thanks Atnevon for constantly updating things on the site for the members.

*tips hat*

Enjoy!

Leadership

Posted By: SanctuaryRTBH - May.16.2009 - Comments(6)

One of my friends was having a discussion with me a while back and noticed a rather strange observation regarding the people I closely associate with in my life - they all had leadership qualities to them as people. There were only one or two excepttions to her observation.

So I had to think about what those qualities in my friends really entailed and then the word - leadership.

What exactly does that mean - leadership? What does leadership mean to you?

Woman Wins the Lotto 5 Times

Posted By: Atnevon - May.7.2009 - Comments(2)

Okay, this just borders on ridiculous. One woman has managed to win the lotto 5 separate times just since September... and they say this game isn't rigged.

So wrong... so very very wrong.

Taxing 100% of AIG Bonuses

Posted By: Atnevon - March.17.2009 - Comments(3)

QUOTE
WASHINGTON - Congress finally has come up with a politically popular tax plan: a near-total tax on the $165 million in bonuses AIG says it must pay executives of its division blamed for its nearly $100 billion loss last year.

The idea of using taxes to recoup those payments and another $450 million in bonuses over the next two years spread like wildfire among Democrats Tuesday as taxpayer anger turned up the heat on the federal government, which has sunk $170 billion into AIG to keep it from falling into bankruptcy.

"If we can't kill the big bonuses, we'll tax the big bonuses," said Rep. Steve Israel (D-Huntington) as he introduced a bill late Monday for a 100 percent tax on bonuses over $100,000 at federally bailed out firms.

I think this is definitely a creative workaround to the already signed contracts that these employees had for bonuses. While it's a little worrisome to see the government taking 100% of people's bonuses, I think in this particular case it may be well warranted.

What do you think of the idea? Does this go too far, or does it maybe not go far enough?
