[15:05] <@Atnevon> For those that find they cannot speak, don't worry, sanctuary has your voices and shall give them back soon :) [15:05] <@SanctuaryRTBH> I do I do and I swear I will take stellar care of them for a bit :) #06[15:05] * @SanctuaryRTBH hads all the lips popcorn [15:05] <@Atnevon> I'd like to start by welcoming Kooper Kain to our live chat and interview session on Second Shifters. It really is a pleasure to have you guys here :) [15:05] <@WetBot> Now Playing: Kooper Kain - Goodnight Lustmord. [15:05] <@SanctuaryRTBH> hnds* [15:05] <@SanctuaryRTBH> hands* [15:05] <+kooper_kain> this one is so quiet [15:06] <@RTB> SanctuaryRTBH, typo queen. [15:06] <@SanctuaryRTBH> yes I am. [15:06] <@SanctuaryRTBH> ?me hits RTB with the bat again [15:06] <+kooper_kain> this one is to drink a lot of red wine to [15:06] <@RTB> Point proven. (now let kooper_kain and Atnevon talk :] ) [15:06] <@SanctuaryRTBH> LOL [15:06] <@SanctuaryRTBH> red wine huh? [15:07] <@Atnevon> nah, she does quite well in the logs :) very few typos compared to most people I've seen [15:07] <+kooper_kain> or Fireball [15:07] <@SanctuaryRTBH> lol atnevon - I am the typo queen - I have a crown - no touchie!!!! [15:07] <@SanctuaryRTBH> My crown! [15:07] <@SanctuaryRTBH> MINE! [15:07] <@Atnevon> lol, okay, you can keeps the crown :) [15:07] <@SanctuaryRTBH> :-D [15:08] <@SanctuaryRTBH> this one is haunting :) [15:08] <@Atnevon> Our first question for you, kooper_kain, is about your albums: [15:08] <@Atnevon> How would you say that your music has evolved through the course of producing all 3 of your albums? [15:09] <+kooper_kain> yes, it's become more mature in some ways. I originally started KK so I could sing ( after years of drumming for other bands ) so, in the beginning, KK was much more ham-fisted in it's production [15:09] <+kooper_kain> my mixing and gear is better now too. [15:09] <@WetBot> Now Playing: Kooper Kain - Eyes On The Ocean. [15:10] <@SanctuaryRTBH> Do you do most of the mixing? or does the band as a whole have a hand in those processes? [15:12] <@RTB> (perhaps a question for later if there's time. I've heard that mixes nowadays for the top40 stuff is done for earbuds at 90dB or so, and thus audiophiles complain. Is this true, and also, do you have anything you mix in specific for?) [15:12] <+kooper_kain> I do all the music production, and mixing. Then I give it to the guys and they learn the songs for live performance. Although Marty Lowe handles guitars. It's only this way because I found it so hard to get everyone together to record stuff with me. [15:13] <+kooper_kain> yes, I mix for home stereos, car stereos, ipods and all the small stuff. If it sounds good on the small stuff, it'll sound great on the big stuff. [15:13] <@WetBot> Now Playing: Kooper Kain - Crowded. [15:14] <@RTB> In other words, those complaining are doing it for no reason? Typical. [15:14] <+kooper_kain> generally because that's what folks have. They tend not to have big studios for listening to the music in. [15:15] <@SanctuaryRTBH> Okay someone needs to educate me. One of the things I've noticed with some bands is the DB are too loud and it sounds terrible when played loud on a stereo. What is the DB level that is 'good' for sound? [15:15] <@SanctuaryRTBH> RTB I complain over the "loud" factor some recordings have :-p [15:15] <@SanctuaryRTBH> It makes it go all - well yucky. [15:16] <+kooper_kain> DB just means decibels, or overall volume of a mix or playback. It will depend largely on the music style and mixing. [15:16] <@WetBot> Now Playing: Kooper Kain - 80 Years Of Dirt. [15:16] <+kooper_kain> sometimes artists will oversaturate a mix and it can get muddy, if that's what you mean... [15:17] <@SanctuaryRTBH> *nods* thank you :) Yes - its like the bass in particular goes - well muddy is a good word. [15:17] <@SanctuaryRTBH> Drives me bananas [15:18] <+kooper_kain> this is another reason I tend to mix for smaller systems. They don't handle low end as well and it helps to keep the mixes in check. [15:18] <+kooper_kain> it's too easy to push a mix too hard on a big system. [15:19] <@SanctuaryRTBH> yet, it consistently sounds good regardless of the medium I'm playing it on. [15:19] <+kooper_kain> KK music? [15:19] <@WetBot> Now Playing: Kooper Kain - Alien. [15:19] <@SanctuaryRTBH> So you've done well on that. Obviously paying close attention to things. Yes the KK music. [15:19] <+kooper_kain> thanks EH! [15:19] <@SanctuaryRTBH> yw :) [15:20] <@Atnevon> Your myspace bio says that you have your own personal independent label called s/n ratio records. Can you tell us what led to making your own label, and where the name came from? [15:20] <+kooper_kain> this one is also fun to play live [15:21] <+kooper_kain> sure. s/n ratio is a studio term for signal to noise ratio. ie:the noise introduced into a signal chain when mixing. geeky I know. [15:21] <+kooper_kain> As for starting my own label... [15:21] <@SanctuaryRTBH> Sighs I told ya'll I was surrounded by geeks ;) [15:21] <@Atnevon> lol, they're everywhere! [15:22] <@RTB> At least I knew what it meant :] [15:22] <+kooper_kain> I found it easier in a business sense to have all the paperwork and releases under my control. #06[15:22] * @Atnevon hides his php code behind this window. #06[15:22] * @RTB hides the fact he's looking at perl code [15:22] <+kooper_kain> the new KK album is the 5th release to officially come out on s/n ratio. [15:22] <@WetBot> Now Playing: Kooper Kain - All That's Needed. [15:22] <+kooper_kain> over [15:23] <@SanctuaryRTBH> Yes starting your own label I would think is a major endeavor. How is it easier -more the creative control? #06[15:23] * @SanctuaryRTBH nerfs all the geeks [15:23] <+kooper_kain> Yup, total creative control over music, graphics, time taken to release etc... [15:24] <@RTB> And has there been a positive/negative interest in your label, as in artists wanting to join, companies wanting to take it over? [15:24] <@SanctuaryRTBH> Graphic control isn't something would have considered - but I notice you do your own art for sleeves as well. [15:25] <+kooper_kain> lots of positive interest in the label with regard to artists wanting to be on it, and also with people being more interested in it's releases. No companies wanting to take it over though. [15:26] <@SanctuaryRTBH> Do you do work with / for other artists? [15:26] <@WetBot> Now Playing: Kooper Kain - Spiller. [15:26] <+kooper_kain> Yes, I do all of my own graphics too. I don't have time for folks to "get back to me" I love to just push ahead. [15:26] <@SanctuaryRTBH> LOl @ get back to you. I so get that. [15:26] <+kooper_kain> I love working with other artists. [15:27] <@SanctuaryRTBH> Do you musically perform with others or do remixes of their work in collaboration? [15:27] <+kooper_kain> I do recording, production and graphics for other artists too. [15:28] <+kooper_kain> Yes, I like to remix other bands and collaborate. [15:28] <+kooper_kain> It's just so easy to accommodate all that these days. [15:28] <@SanctuaryRTBH> Is there anyone that you really want to work with if you had the opportunity? [15:28] <@SanctuaryRTBH> It is - thank you technology! [15:28] <+kooper_kain> Suicide Commando and Ladytron. [15:29] <@SanctuaryRTBH> What about those two inspires you to want too? [15:30] <+kooper_kain> they are great examples of simplicity, yet effectiveness in songwriting. As well as longevity. [15:30] <+kooper_kain> Ladytron's been at it for 9 years! [15:30] <@WetBot> Now Playing: Kooper Kain - Sin City Misfit. [15:30] <@SanctuaryRTBH> Speaking of Longevity - where do you want to see Kooper Kain in 10 years? [15:31] <+kooper_kain> touring more, hopefully! ha ha! [15:31] <+kooper_kain> touring is the most fun thing about being in a band. [15:32] <@SanctuaryRTBH> What was your favorite place to play? [15:32] <+kooper_kain> touring with a new record in our hot little paws. [15:32] <+kooper_kain> New Orleans was a total scream. We loved it. [15:32] <@SanctuaryRTBH> and the most memorable on stage experience? (lol @ hot little paws) [15:33] <+kooper_kain> Playing a big Fashion Rock fashion show at a theatre here in Vancouver. Models, guerrilla painters in the background splashing paint everywhere, a great sound system and 1200 people! [15:33] <@WetBot> Now Playing: Kooper Kain - Sentence Now. [15:34] <@SanctuaryRTBH> nice! [15:34] <@SanctuaryRTBH> what's the one place where you've not been - that you really want to go play at and why. [15:35] <+kooper_kain> It's up on YouTube somewhere, we did 2 songs. One of which was a cover of "So Alive" by Love and Rockets. [15:35] <+kooper_kain> Well, OHIO of course....heh [15:35] <@SanctuaryRTBH> note to self: youtube hunt [15:35] <+kooper_kain> But after that, probably Spain [15:35] <@SanctuaryRTBH> lol OHIO. Love it! [15:36] <@SanctuaryRTBH> Any reason for Spain? [15:36] <@WetBot> Now Playing: Kooper Kain - Red Satin Rivers. [15:36] <+kooper_kain> I hear audiences are really receptive in parts of Europe. Paris would be great to. Despite the urine smell. [15:36] <@SanctuaryRTBH> lol [15:37] <+kooper_kain> Up all night playing and then breakfast at a small cafe #03[15:37] * DeathFey has joined #darksites.com [15:37] <@Dirk> is the current song based on or inspired by "this is not america"? [15:38] <+kooper_kain> What is that? [15:38] <@SanctuaryRTBH> Hi deathfey - chat is temp moderated - no worries your lips are safe with me :) [15:38] <@Dirk> red satin rivers [15:38] <+kooper_kain> howdy DeathFey [15:38] <+kooper_kain> what is "this is not america"? [15:38] <@RTB> Youtube kooper kain got me two hits, one live show for over 1 hour and a press kit. [15:39] <@Dirk> oh sorry, forget to mention it's david bowie [15:39] <@SanctuaryRTBH> LOL [15:39] <@WetBot> Now Playing: Kooper Kain - Orchid. [15:39] <+kooper_kain> A lot of KK is inspired by David Bowie...for sure. [15:40] <+kooper_kain> Yup, the live 1 hour show is the one you want. We're at the beginning. [15:40] <@SanctuaryRTBH> Bowie is apparently a great guy too. So that's a good thing :) [15:40] <+kooper_kain> I look really fat in the video....yikes! [15:40] <@RTB> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OjbfiD440nI < the link for those too lazy to search [15:40] <@SanctuaryRTBH> Everyone looks fat in videos. [15:40] <@SanctuaryRTBH> ty RTB [15:41] <+kooper_kain> My hair is all shorn off now too [15:41] <+kooper_kain> Many folks thing my vibrato in this song is an effect. it's not, it's just my vocal style. #02[15:42] * DeathFey Quit (Ping Timeout#) [15:42] <+kooper_kain> over [15:43] <+kooper_kain> by the way Atnevon....you're still the king! #03[15:43] * DeathFey has joined #darksites.com [15:43] <@SanctuaryRTBH> lol he really is :) [15:43] <@SanctuaryRTBH> wb deathfey [15:43] <+kooper_kain> you too Sanct. [15:43] <@SanctuaryRTBH> awee thankies. [15:44] <@Atnevon> lol, not I. I give much of the credit for this series to Sanctuary, as the inspiration and energy behind it :) Thank you though. Very glad you like it :) [15:44] <@Atnevon> Since we were on a little geeky kick there for a bit: Your newest album is up on itunes right now. Has the new age of digital distribution had a strong impact on the way you create and distribute your music? [15:44] <@WetBot> Now Playing: Kooper Kain - Too Far Gone. [15:44] <@SanctuaryRTBH> I did nothing. *hides* [15:44] <@SanctuaryRTBH> Inncocent *hides* [15:44] <@Atnevon> lol. shy girl :) [15:45] <@SanctuaryRTBH> No. Pay no attention to the girl behind the curtain. [15:45] <+kooper_kain> Yes, most definitely, it means we only have to press 1000 or so cds. The rest of the time we can just direct people to links. [15:45] <+kooper_kain> What's cd pressing like in the U.S. $ wise? [15:45] <@RTB> Wouldn't that make it less cost effective to press cds at all? [15:47] <@Atnevon> I want to say about $1 per cd on average [15:47] <+kooper_kain> There are so many people who love music but don't want to sit in front of their computers or download it in order to listen to it, they would rather just pop to into their stereo at home or in their car and go. [15:47] <@SanctuaryRTBH> I'm not sure what the costing is like in the USA - but I believe relative wise it's slightly cheaper. [15:48] <+kooper_kain> There are also all those people who still love to get a real cd with artwork , lyrics, pictures and info about a band without relying on a computer to get it. I know people who even love the smell of fresh printing ink. [15:48] <@WetBot> Now Playing: Kooper Kain - Tonal. [15:49] <@SanctuaryRTBH> Where do you see the music industry heading with all the new technology available? [15:49] <+kooper_kain> There will always be folks like that. [15:50] <@Dirk> i agree on the decent album art. pink floyd's pulse cd covers/booklet/blinking led really added to the whole thing. [15:50] <+kooper_kain> Like I mentioned in the interview, I figure technology will change the way music is distributed and purchased, but talent and dedication is still up to the humans. [15:51] <@SanctuaryRTBH> *nods* [15:51] <+kooper_kain> I'm looking forward to more 3d experiences with artwork ( like lenticular printing etc...) [15:51] <@WetBot> Now Playing: Kooper Kain - The Ne'er Do Well. [15:51] <@RTB> Though the people opposed to it will just throw lawsuits and money against it, recent example being a lawsuit in Spain against P2P :/ [15:52] <@SanctuaryRTBH> Do you see the larger corporations losing their hold on the artists? (RTB: yeah) [15:52] <@Dirk> what about box sets with miniature 3d stages and artists? something like the collectors editions of lord of the rings. [15:52] <+kooper_kain> Wow, sounds like I mixed too much low end on this early tune. Sorry Atn.! [15:53] <@Atnevon> you're fine, no worries at all :) I have absolutely 0 musical talent at all myself... 'tis why I DJ, lol [15:53] <@SanctuaryRTBH> LOL [15:53] <+kooper_kain> Yes, if the corps. won't start doing things more for the creators of the product they're slinging, they won't even have any artists to lose! [15:55] <@SanctuaryRTBH> Cery true. [15:55] <@WetBot> Now Playing: Kooper Kain - The Cowboy Vampire. [15:55] <@SanctuaryRTBH> Very* [15:55] <+kooper_kain> The public is more and more demanding every year about what they want to see and the quality they want. The artists will not bother putting all the effort necessary to keep interest on behalf of a label if the label is kicking them in the ass. [15:55] <@RTB> Though the corporations still have the contracts to strangle artists with. [15:56] <@SanctuaryRTBH> For now RTB [15:56] <+kooper_kain> Soon, the artists won't even court the labels that they know have a bad reputation. [15:56] <@WetBot> Now Playing: Kooper Kain - Too Far Gone. [15:57] <@RTB> I think Atnevon likes this song. [15:57] <@Dirk> for now and eternity you mean, they still are milking elvis presley. [15:57] <@SanctuaryRTBH> The power is shifting for sure :) [15:57] <@Atnevon> How long were you each involved in the music scene before getting together as a band? What made you decide to form the group? Was there anything specific that got you together? [15:58] <+kooper_kain> Yes, I put the band together with a small handful of friends so we could perform the music I made in the studio. It was for fun to start and quickly became something we knew we wanted to continue with. [16:00] <@SanctuaryRTBH> So thus far you are exceeding the expectations that you had for yourself at the start? [16:00] <+kooper_kain> hey Atn. would you play Hydrogen Echo Girl or Shocker on here for me so I can hear the mixes? (I'm a geek I know...) [16:00] <@SanctuaryRTBH> lol [16:00] <@WetBot> Now Playing: Kooper Kain - Tonal. [16:00] <@SanctuaryRTBH> I'm surrounded! i love it! [16:00] <@SanctuaryRTBH> Geek is the new sheek *nods* [16:00] <@Atnevon> surely kooper_kain :) [16:01] <@RTB> I was going to save this link for later, but sanct's asking for it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B1O2jcfOylU ( Atnevon can edit this out later) [16:01] <+kooper_kain> I think Kooper Kain has yet to release the ideal KK album. Who knows how many tries it will take! Ha Ha! [16:01] <@SanctuaryRTBH> I may have to hit you again RTB [16:01] <@RTB> Just watch/listen :D [16:01] <+kooper_kain> We'll just keep pounding away until we get it right....ish [16:02] <@RTB> Unlike the pounding sanct keeps attempting on me, because that stuff ain't working. ;] [16:02] <@SanctuaryRTBH> What would your ideal be KK - or is it just you'll know it when you feel it? [16:02] <+kooper_kain> know it when I feel it....definitely. [16:02] <@SanctuaryRTBH> RTB:thats COOL [16:03] <+kooper_kain> Any suggestions about the direction of the new one....anyone?.....Bueller?.....Bueller? [16:03] <@SanctuaryRTBH> KK: Do you look back on your work and always see something you'd rather have changed. In other words - do you find as an artist you are hard on yourself? [16:03] <@Dirk> not ferris bueller if you happen to have any time off :P [16:03] <@WetBot> Now Playing: Kooper Kain - Hydrogen Echo Girl. [16:05] <@SanctuaryRTBH> I have a feeling they are never going to have time off! [16:06] <+kooper_kain> Only from a mixing point of view Sanct. As far as the music goes, I believe the music is what it is for each album. I'm never too reproachful. [16:06] <+kooper_kain> I do try to think more carefully about song structure these days though. [16:07] <+kooper_kain> Not be so impulsive when finishing a song. [16:07] <@WetBot> Now Playing: Kooper Kain - Shocker. [16:07] <+kooper_kain> Hey THANKS Atn! [16:07] <@Atnevon> No problem at all :) [16:08] <+kooper_kain> If you give me an upload option, I'll just upload the whole second Kk album to you. [16:08] <@SanctuaryRTBH> When you go through the creation process - hat happens for you. An idea... a melody? What is usually your first inspiration? [16:08] <@SanctuaryRTBH> awee you're sweet! [16:09] <+kooper_kain> Haha! It's funny. For someone as obsessed about drums and vocals as I am, I still start most songs from a melody or hook. [16:09] <@Atnevon> (We can get something setup for you, no problem - We'll try to get that for you later today) [16:09] <+kooper_kain> cool [16:10] <+kooper_kain> vocal melodies, guitar, synths etc... [16:11] <@SanctuaryRTBH> May I link your second project "SIMIAN SPECIAL" on your Kooper Kain artists profile for folks? [16:11] <@WetBot> Now Playing: Kooper Kain - The Ne'er Do Well. [16:11] <+kooper_kain> Now that Kk is a full 4 piece though, there will definitely be more input form the others and I 'm sure the songwriting will improve. [16:12] <@SanctuaryRTBH> You've really evolved with each album too. So I imagine it'll only get better :) [16:12] <+kooper_kain> Sorry about the popping Atn. This was on the first album. i mixed it on a ghetto blaster!!!! [16:12] <@SanctuaryRTBH> wow [16:13] <@Atnevon> LOL. Still sounds good :) [16:13] <+kooper_kain> thanks for the positive feed back folks! [16:13] <+kooper_kain> Sure Sanct. link up the Simian! [16:13] <@WetBot> Now Playing: Kooper Kain - The Cowboy Vampire. [16:14] <@Dirk> if you can do that with a ghetto blaster you can work miracles in a proper studio. [16:14] <@SanctuaryRTBH> I will never name the band that did a bad with mixing - as they are - well - close - but as long as you never do a "holy cow too loud" mix - atnevon won't have to give you to me for dinner. :) [16:14] <@Dirk> so it's talent over technology any day. [16:14] <@SanctuaryRTBH> agrrred [16:15] <@SanctuaryRTBH> ty Kooper Kain :) [16:15] <+kooper_kain> Ha! thanks Dirk! Yeah, it's "ear, not gear" [16:15] <+kooper_kain> this is truly a headphone track [16:15] <+kooper_kain> there's so much going on the background [16:16] <@RTB> Good for me [16:16] <@WetBot> Now Playing: Kooper Kain - Spiller. [16:16] <@SanctuaryRTBH> lol RTB [16:17] <+kooper_kain> Do you guys prefer the 4/4 kick drum feel of some of the KK songs? Or do you like the guitar driven stuff? [16:17] <+kooper_kain> What would you folks like to hear more of in the next album. if anything? [16:17] <@SanctuaryRTBH> I personally am liking the drums. #02[16:17] * @Dirk Quit (Connection reset by peer#) [16:18] <@RTB> I personally liked some of the guitar starts. [16:18] <@SanctuaryRTBH> RTb has to be different :-p [16:18] <+kooper_kain> Glad to see some mixed opinions [16:18] <@RTB> Would be boring if we all had the same opinion [16:18] <@SanctuaryRTBH> I'd like to see more keyboard work as well. [16:18] <@RTB> I'd say, explore a bit, do your thing :] [16:18] <@SanctuaryRTBH> taking a larger front - but then again - I like keys lol [16:19] <@SanctuaryRTBH> *nods* @ do your thing. [16:19] <+kooper_kain> There will be much more synth on the new songs. The new KK will be far more tech driven. [16:19] <@SanctuaryRTBH> o.O [16:19] <+kooper_kain> Stompin' but still melodic. [16:19] <@RTB> Can't wait to hear it on RTBH. [16:19] <@SanctuaryRTBH> :) [16:19] <@RTB> Since buying stuff from the US is hell. [16:20] <@SanctuaryRTBH> it can be. [16:20] <+kooper_kain> We're not worried about money. We just want people to hear the music. [16:20] <@WetBot> Now Playing: Kooper Kain - Sin City Misfit. [16:20] <@SanctuaryRTBH> *nods* on hearing the music. [16:20] <+kooper_kain> And maybe come to a show...that would be swell. [16:21] <@RTB> Hmm, would have to be in Holland. [16:21] <+kooper_kain> Holland would be so fantastic! [16:21] <+kooper_kain> Amsterdam baby! [16:21] <@RTB> Just note there's more to Holland than Amsterdam. [16:21] <+kooper_kain> Rotterdam-dam-dam-dam [16:22] <@RTB> Far, far more. [16:22] <+kooper_kain> I would prefer to see the outskirts and the countryside of Holland than the tourist traps. [16:22] <@SanctuaryRTBH> Are you planning on touring soon? (as I see no dates on myspace yet) maybe even Ontarioooooooooooooooo [16:23] <+kooper_kain> Ontario would be great if we could set up a show there! No one has gotten back to us. [16:23] <@WetBot> Now Playing: Kooper Kain - Shocker. [16:24] <+kooper_kain> Hey Atn. do you want me to email you a song or two from Kk album two right now? [16:24] <@SanctuaryRTBH> There is a guy Downtown toronto owns a lot of Clubs - his names lance. Let me see if I can find his contact for you. (as he owns several spots) [16:24] <@Atnevon> Sure KK :) atnevon@secondshifters.com works best for that. [16:25] <+kooper_kain> cool, hang on a moment..... [16:26] <@SanctuaryRTBH> www.thevatikan.com is one of lance's. [16:26] <@RTB> There's stuff like this in Holland and more: http://www.arrowrockfestival.nl/Default.asp?id=&LNG=EN [16:27] <@SanctuaryRTBH> opps linkies no working [16:27] <@WetBot> Now Playing: Kooper Kain - Sentence Now. [16:28] <@SanctuaryRTBH> He may have changed the name again LOL [16:28] <@SanctuaryRTBH> note to self: stalk Lance. [16:29] <@Atnevon> lol :) the linky makes me think of the catholic church.
