“The Originals” a Vampire Diaries Spin-off Set to Air this Fall

It’s not often, if at all, that you see a spin-off pilot airing near the end of  a season of its originating show, but here you have it. It happened. Season four, episode 20 of The Vampire Diaries saw the spawning of the back door pilot show “The Originals”, The CW’s latest venture into the vampire / supernatural subculture.

When the original vampire family was introduced during the second season of The Vampire Diaries, rumors quickly began to circulate about a possible spin-off being developed.  In 2011 there was, in fact, a spin-off in development behind closed doors, but it wasn’t until another short-lived supernatural based series (The Secret Circle) was cancelled, after only one season, that the reality of The Originals was in play.

While The Vampire Diaries has a more teenage high school angst angle, The Originals has a more adult feel to it. Think ” Buffy, the Vampire Slayer” and its spin-off, “Angel”.

The Originals is set in the French Quarter of New Orleans and follows the story of Klaus, one of the original vampires. It explores his quest for power, and his ambition to take back control of the city that his family once helped to build. At least that’s what we’re led to believe, based on the pilot and promos. I’m personally hoping to see Elijah, my favorite character of the original vampires, get to play a more active role in this series.

Although, as mentioned, the pilot episode was aired in the Vampire Diaries, but a slightly altered version of it will debut this fall on The CW. I’m curious to see where they go with it overall.

You can read more about the series, and see the promo, in our television section The Originals, or visit the The CW’s page here: The CW

Tell us what you think of this development. Is this something you’ll be watching this fall?
